Mental Health & Wellness Program

Our Mental Health & Wellness Program provides culturally sensitive support for Ukrainian refugees and immigrants in Michigan. We focus on emotional well-being, trauma recovery, and community connection through individual counseling, group sessions, and educational workshops.

Past & Foundational Programs

UASMI has a history of collaborating with community organizations to build meaningful support systems for Ukrainian refugees in Michigan. In partnership with Treetops Collective, we offered “Circle of Support”, a transformative program that created a network of connection, teaching tangible coping skills and self-awareness. Participants have reported long-term benefits—from crisis navigation to deeper self-insight—that persist well beyond the program’s duration.

We also facilitated narrative dialogue social groups, which invited community members to share stories from their lives in Ukraine and their journeys to the U.S. Through conversational storytelling, individuals found resonance with one another’s experiences, formed new connections, exchanged resources, and cultivated empathy and mutual support. These historical programs established the foundation of trust, community cohesion, and shared resilience we build on today.

Current Initiatives & Goals

Today, UASMI is intentionally designing mental health and wellness programs that reflect the real, articulated needs of our community. We are launching a community well-being survey to guide program development grounded in lived experience. Based on survey results, we plan to support the following components:

  • Referral pathways to local mental health professionals and culturally competent resources.

  • Support groups & mentorship for adults, children, and parents.

  • Continued offerings of Circle of Support, social groups, and therapeutic group formats.

  • Psychoeducational programs (workshops, webinars) focusing on stress management, trauma recovery, resiliency, and navigating immigration challenges.

  • Newsletters & social media resources that translate current mental health research into accessible tips and insights, especially relevant for Ukrainian immigrants and those affected by war or displacement.
